Celebrating 86 Years of Active Community Gardening
Celebrating 86 Years of Active Community Gardening
Our Logo pictured above is the Monarda also know as the Scarlet BeeBalm. The Monarda attracts bees, butterflies, birds and other colourful insects.
In 1926 the Newmarket Horticultural Society(NHS) was founded with the purpose of promoting horticulture-the joy of plants and gardening for the benefit of its members and the public. Our logo is the Monarda (Scarlet Beebalm). The Monarda attracts bees, and because of this association with the slogan of The Town of Newmarket, which is “Hive of Activity”, the Monarda was chosen as our official logo. Our membership includes both novice and expert gardeners whose social activities include seed and plant exchanges, annual plant sales, maintenance of public gardens, communication through newsletters and associations with other horticultural societies throughout Ontario. The NHS is a proud member of District 5 of the Ontario Horticultural Association and participates in many intersociety functions. The NHS normally holds general meetings for members and the public at the Newmarket Community Centre but due to renovations in 2011, the meetings will be held at the Newmarket Legion Hall until further notice. We publish a bimonthly newsletter entitled Monarda for our members. Certain articles and news items from the Monarda appear regularly on this web site, click on the menu tabs at the top of this page to view more pages on this site. Our connections page will help you get in touch with other horticultural societies and garden clubs. The out and about page keeps you up to date on important gardening in Ontario and elsewhere. Check out the menu bar at the top of each page to connect to more pages on our web site. We hold an annual plant sale fund raising event each spring with plants mainly supplied from our members’ gardens. This is always a popular event with the public and sells out quite quickly. Check out the plant sale info on our2012 Plant Sale page. To review some of our scheduled events, go to our Events Page and to view some of our activities over the past year go to our Events Summary page and also our NHS Picture Albums Page.
